ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Washington University in St. Louis

Senior Lecturer

Arch 616, Degree Project Studio, Spring 2013

This is the final semester studio where each student develops a comprehensive design project that conveys an independent, critical position on the making of architecture in the world. This includes development of structural and environmental systems, building envelope systems, life-safety issues, and technical construction sections and assemblies, along with experiential renderings and a focus on telling a critical project story. Based on the product of the preceding Design Thinking: Research and Design Methods, each student develops an aspiring and compelling conceptual framework, progresses to a convincing development of all aspects of the project; formal, spatial, experiential, organizational, structural, and technical, and creates a clear, full, and persuasive presentation of their work.

Arch 580, Design Thinking: Research and Design Methods, Spring 2013

Each student develops an independent, critical position on the making of architecture in the world – an individually initiated intentional, programmatic, and situational framework to serve as the basis for the Degree Project studio. With extensive data-gathering research in a chosen area of inquiry the student develops intentions in a clear relationship to a contemporary architectural discourse.

Arch 616, Degree Project Studio, Fall 2012

Arch 580, Design Thinking: Research and Design Methods, Fall 2012

Arch 438, Environmental Systems 1, Fall 2012

The foundation course in the architectural technology sequence. This course addresses the relationship between buildings and an expanded idea of context, including ideas of environment, landform, energy, material and space. The class places an emphasis on each student developing his or her own attitude toward architectural sustainability, its role within the design process, and its relationship to architectural form. The class is organized around the themes of climate, site and energy.  The theme of climate addresses macro- and micro-climates, and the roles they have in developing architectural form through passive strategies. The theme of site expands the idea of the architectural project to examine landform, position, access and region. The theme of energy looks at both embodiment and consumption of energy to understand how the architect helps to control and direct these flows at macro and micro levels. Two goals for the class are to provide students with ways of thinking about and of working with issues of sustainability which can inform their design practice, and to equip them with the basic knowledge needed to continue within the technology sequence.

Arch 580, Design Thinking: Research and Design Methods, Spring 2012

Arch 419, Urban Housing Studio, Fall 2011

The third semester of the three-semester core design studio sequence is a counterpoint to the knowledge base and skills acquired during the previous year. This studio investigates the contemporary situation of urban housing, determined by the increasingly dominant demands of technology and economics, the inherited typologies of dwelling form, the constantly changing definition of housing as a program, and the unchanging nature of humankind in their dwelling.

ARCH 504: Accelerated Design III Spring 2009

The third of three accelerated design studios, this course focuses on the integration of material learned in previous studios with urban-based design problems of increasing scale and complexity within the frameworks of sustainability and universal design. Students will demonstrate an ability to use research and critical thinking skills, including the use of case precedents, and the ability to integrate various building systems in building design.

ARCH 608: Architectural Design V Fall 2008

A continuation of previous studio course work with an emphasis on the programming and design of individual urban buildings with culture, context and precedent as major form determinants. Clear development and integration of structural, mechanical and life safety systems will be a focus of the course. The concepts of integrated practice and building information modeling will be introduced.

ARCH 301: Architectural Design IV Spring 2008

A continuation of previous studio course work with an increased emphasis upon development and integration of structural and mechanical subsystems.
